The trend is striking because it shows that the credit crunch is starting to affect the financing plans of companies, not just in the highly leveraged sector but in the investment grade arena as well. It also casts fresh doubt on the ability of the European corporate bond market to challenge the US." February 13 - Bloomberg (John Glover): "Half of the loans backing leveraged buyouts in Europe risk breaching investor safeguards or defaulting as company earnings and debt projections miss targets, Standard & Poor's said... 'There is a heightened potential for defaults,' S&P analysts led by Taron Wade... wrote. Fifty-three percent of the companies owned by buyout firms in S&P's study have more debt than forecast, making them vulnerable to default... In LBOs, firms borrow about two-thirds of the acquisition price, piling the debt onto the takeover target." Let bankruptcy judges step in
They can't pay what they agreed but can pay more than their lenders could net from foreclosure. Owners in this category can afford their homes but not their mortgages. Most want to stay and are willing to pay what their home is worth. It is in their lender's economic interest to let them. Foreclosure is expensive, and lenders end up bearing most of the costs. Foreclosed houses tend to sell for less than the market price, thus driving housing prices down further — and generating more foreclosures. Most plans for solving the mortgage crisis seek to promote communication between lenders and borrowers so they will make this mutually beneficial deal. Often, however, the mortgages have been sold and securitized. Each investor owns only a small fraction of each mortgage, making direct negotiations impractical.
WSJ Correspondents on Their Adopted Hometowns
Readily available designer brands cost what they would in New York. A Hugo Boss tie, for example, is $110. A liter of fresh milk costs about $1.40. A Big Mac at McDonald's is $2.70, and a grande latte from Starbucks is $4.40. Dinner for two at a restaurant with a glass of wine each costs $55 to $80, but at some of the more popular nightspots, the tab can quickly add up to $160 or more. Gas is cheap, with a gallon costing $1.70. Downside: The roads are choked with cars whizzing through dusty roundabouts and zigging across five highway lanes at a time. Also, it's hot—up to 113 degrees in August. Upside: Americans can easily find the comforts of home. English is widely spoken. Movie theaters show the latest Harry Potter film in English and U.S. best-sellers line the shelves of bookstores.

Before his sentencing in Newmarket, Ramage called Magnuson "a dear friend and mentor." The former Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman added, "I can only imagine what a loving husband and father he was [and] by the grace of God, I stand here today." Ontario Superior Court Justice Alexander Sosna called the accident "tragic and senseless." While Sosna said Ramage was an "exemplary citizen," he insisted the sentence needed to send a harsh message to the public.
Officials Threaten to Block Tanker Funds
Tiahrt told Bloomberg News late Wednesday that there is a possibility that Congress will block funding for the program. This comes after members of Connecticut's congressional delegation formally requested a briefing with the Air Force over the tanker contract. Had Boeing won the deal, as expect. Pratt & Whitney would have built the engines for the 600 tankers and Hamilton Sundstrand would have worked on the electrical systems. Both companies are based in Connecticut. In a letter sent to Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne Wednesday, the lawmakers expressed concern that the award did not consider the U.S. jobs that would be affected. They also said the Air Force did not take into account the subsidies from European governments to its aerospace industry, which puts the U.S. contractors at a disadvantage.

Swing to Obama Expected
UN anti-drug crusaders seeking to make criminals out of millions of Americans who safely use marijuana are alienating public opinion against the UN. The American public increasingly shows it understands that in other countries where street drugs are decriminalized and taxed to raise government revenue, drug related crime disappears, AIDS and hepatitis cases decline, hard drug addicts seek medical treatment, drug addiction wanes and drug problems are greatly and economically reduced. The US had no marijuana, cocaine or opiate problems until the turn of the century. American prohibitionists lied and coerced the public into adopting their regressive laws in order to control Hispanic, African and Oriental immigrants by making their drugs of choice illegal, Before that, tinctures of hashish and opium were used medicinally and sold over the counter with no apparent problems and Coca Cola contained real cocaine Like with Alcohol prohibition, drug prohibitionist laws have resulted in the imprisonment and murder of thousands and the growth of a multi-billion dollar drug trade that corrupts justice and governments.
