Father panics as SUV is stolen Woman takes vehicle with infant inside

A trip to return a DVD rental left a Las Vegas father with the worry of a lifetime Thursday morning when a woman stole the vehicle carrying his infant son.

The man, who was not identified by police, stopped in front of the Albertson's at 7350 S. Rainbow Blvd. to return a movie to a storefront kiosk about 10:20 a.m. He left his son in the sport-utility vehicle with the engine running, Las Vegas police said.

He was 10 to 15 feet from the vehicle when a woman hopped behind the wheel and sped away, officer Bill Cassell said.

A Salvation Army bell ringer, who asked to be identified only as Fitzgerald, saw the vehicle zip by with the father running along the driver's side.

Public has its say today on Sanibel tolls

Avoiding rush hour on the Sanibel Causeway could save drivers money with lower tolls during nonpeak hours.

That is just one of the tolling alternatives the Lee County Department of Transportation is looking at to relieve rush hour bottlenecks on the bridge.

The department will hold a workshop this evening to gather public input on the alternatives and take suggestions.

The program is not aimed at increasing or decreasing toll revenue.

Its to do with improving congestion on the causeway and therefore on the island, said Michela Meucci of Cella Molnar & Associates, public information consultant.

Lee DOT has found that weekday peak hours for traveling onto the island appear to be 7 to 9 a.m. and for traveling off the island 3 to 6 p.m., but those hours are still being analyzed.

What makes the car alive is for it to be responsive, animate. ... There has to be more of a message than 'I'm beautiful, I'm powerful, I'm sexy'.

Study: For women, heart risks fade but new cancers arise

That heart trouble associated with hormones may not be permanent is good news for millions of women who quit taking them after the government study was halted six years ago because of heart risks and breast cancer.

But the new risks for other cancers, particularly lung tumors, in women who had taken estrogen-progestin pills for about five years puzzled the researchers and outside experts.

Those risks "were completely unanticipated," said Dr. Gerardo Heiss of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, lead author of the follow-up analysis.

The analysis focused on participants' health in the first two to three years after the study's end. During that time, those who'd taken hormones but stopped were 24 percent more likely to develop any kind of cancer than women who'd taken dummy pills during the study.
