Semi-finals beckon Abbotts Ann

VERNHAM Dean had to show strong resolve to return from a two-goal deficit in the last 20 minutes of their second encounter with title-chasing Southampton Arms Reserves.

In a strong wind, Arms led by a goal at the break and doubled their lead shortly afterwards, but a good passing move by Vernham manager Gary Powley and Dave Davies led to Mark Gibbs scoring his second goal in as many games before Vernham keeper Gavin Davies drew the two sides level with a penalty.

Entertainer 5 Twinings/Foresters 2.

ENTERTAINER continued their unbeaten run after a hard-fought battle.

The first half was scrappy and it wasn't until five minutes into the second half that Rob Burroughs earned a penalty which was converted by Cookie Nixon. Twinings' hard work paid off and they equalised straight away but Chris Knight soon changed the game with two goals.

Ailene Voisin: 'R' word (relocation) is serious in Seattle, not so in ...

Brian Robinson is a Seattle real estate developer with a wife, two young children and a deep, abiding passion for his city and his Sonics. So in July 2006, only hours after learning the local NBA franchise had been purchased by an Oklahoma City businessman, he evaluated the fiscal and physical shortcomings of the refurbished, outdated KeyArena that remain the root cause of this entire mess, acknowledged the very real threat of relocation and initiated his campaign.

One man can't save the Sonics, he figured, but what about the 7,000 volunteers on his "Save Our Sonics" mailing list? What if politicians were targeted, former players enlisted, and current owner Clay Bennett and city/county/state officials demonized? What if NBA Commissioner David Stern were asked to oversee negotiations for construction of a new facility?

"We don't know exactly what to do," Robinson said from his home Saturday, "but this isn't over.

Alleged co-conspirator to go to trial in Marshfield Columbine-style ...

When 18-year-old Joseph Nee went to police in 2004 to tell them about a classmate's plot to attack Marshfield High School, some people called him a hero.

But a month later, Nee was charged in connection with the plan he told police about, a plan that involved locking the school doors, setting off explosives and going hunting for students and teachers whom the plotters wanted dead.

Tobin Kerns, 19, was convicted three months ago and sentenced to serve 10 months in jail for his role in the massacre plot.

On Monday, Nee's trial is to begin, more than three years after he pleaded innocent to charges of conspiracy to commit murder, promotion of anarchy and threatening to use a deadly weapon at a school.

Nee, now 21, will be tried in Plymouth Superior Court in Brockton.

Why Huck Stayed In

He dominated the Kansas caucuses (60-24%) and Washington and Louisiana are too close to call at this hour.

The race isn't any less over than it was 48 hours ago. But it seems likely that Huckabee could accumulate a significant number of delegates and (possibly) keep McCain under the magic number until after March 4th.

There was a question of whether Huckabee supporters would invariably flow to Romney; but Romney voters sure are flocking to Huckabee, raising a legitimate question of whether a social conservative-led anti-McCain bloc would have fared better in the early primaries.

I now expect the protest vote for Huckabee to be quite strong in most states as turnout plummets, maybe 30-40% in the South and Midwest and 20-30% elsewhere, rising to outright victories in caucuses and in the Deep South.

Tucson golf scene one-upping Scottsdale with a PGA Tour-driven resort ...

People try to make Tucson feel inferior to Phoenix-Scottsdale as often as Cooper Manning gets asked what it's like to be the only Manning brother without a Super Bowl ring.

It's not always easy for Tucsonians to come up with a defense either. Their spring training teams are bolting like someone stuck in a bad date. The Chicago White Sox want to leave for Glendale (the Super Bowl stadium town in Phoenix's burgeoning West Valley) next year and join 11 other teams already committed to training in greater Phoenix/Scottsdale in 2009. There's a chance Tucson could be left with two teams and then the worry is, soon no teams.

Tucson's also dealing with an I-10 freeway construction project that some locals fear could last almost as long as Boston's infamous Big Dig. It might already feel like it has if you get stuck in it during rush hour.

The Blotter

Further investigation revealed the child was not injured during the first diaper change by daycare staff. The injury to the child was noticed by the daycare staff but no one notified the police department or child protective services.

Terrance Charles Beard was interviewed by police detectives and admitted that he did assault the 4 month old child.

The case was screened by the Bell County District Attorney's office and a complaint was returned charging Beard with Aggravated Sexual Assault to a Child. Beard was arraigned by Justice of Peace Garland Potvin and a bond of $200,000.00 dollars was set.

He is in the process of being transferred to the Bell County Jail.

Say It Ain’t So, Ralph!

I had mixed feelings when some friends of mine pointed out that Ralph Nader had mentioned me as an "independent military analyst" in his Sunday appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. In responding to a question from Tim Russert about why he was running yet again, he cited a recent article of mine about how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have not only ignored the Pentagon's record spending spree, but have adopted policies that may well involve increasing the military budget.

My point was that we need to get the Democratic frontrunners to address this issue in some fashion before they take office in 2009 (assuming a Democrat wins, which is not guaranteed by any means). It was NOT meant to suggest that we need a third party candidate in the race — although obviously Ralph Nader is free to use the information as he sees fit.
