Father panics as SUV is stolen Woman takes vehicle with infant inside

A trip to return a DVD rental left a Las Vegas father with the worry of a lifetime Thursday morning when a woman stole the vehicle carrying his infant son.

The man, who was not identified by police, stopped in front of the Albertson's at 7350 S. Rainbow Blvd. to return a movie to a storefront kiosk about 10:20 a.m. He left his son in the sport-utility vehicle with the engine running, Las Vegas police said.

He was 10 to 15 feet from the vehicle when a woman hopped behind the wheel and sped away, officer Bill Cassell said.

A Salvation Army bell ringer, who asked to be identified only as Fitzgerald, saw the vehicle zip by with the father running along the driver's side.

AS CONSUMERS AND lenders suffer the harsh consequences of the credit crunch, another industry is experiencing a boom in business: debt collectors.

Just ask Sandy Lubin, owner of the Credit Bureau of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. Based in Grover Beach, Calif., Lubin's 28-employee firm serves as both a credit bureau, selling consumer credit reports to businesses, and as a collection agency, recovering medical and property management debts, such as unpaid rent.

While the credit reporting side of Lubin's business has dropped "fairly substantially," the collection side has seen a 10% increase in new business this year — a trend he predicts will accelerate as the weakening economy and rising debt levels take their toll on consumers' finances. "We're fortunate because we have both sides of the business," he notes.

Town considers leasing Old Town Hall Falling shingle prompts emergency ...

A piece of shingle falling off the roof of Old Town Hall could have just been the beginning, said Plant & Facilities Director Joe Piantedosi.

A crew has been up on a lift since Jan. 31 repairing the roof in the center of the downtown shopping district, after the shingle fell onto Barnard Street last month. Parking spaces on either side of Old Town Hall have been blocked off for nearly three weeks because of the roof's condition.

Not only do roughly 150 cracked or damage shingles need replacing, but workers have learned that the steel snow guards running the length of the historic building have also been in danger of falling. They determined their copper fasteners had failed, curling up and damaging the slate shingles in the process. The repairs are expected to cost about $6,000.

Mix: Gameloft, Safari HD, iPhone, Poolga

During a recent speech, Gameloft founder Michel Guillemot featured an image of an iPhone running a Gameloft game in one of his slides. Pocket Gamer suggests that although the image may have been a mock-up, given Gameloft's past relationship with Apple on iPod games, it would not be surprising to see the company develop games for the iPhone.

Safari HD, an unofficial hack for the Apple TV that allows users to browse the internet using the set-top box, has been released and updated for compatibility with Apple TV software 2.0. Safari HD uses the WebKit rendering engine, and supports web plugins such as Flash and any others supported by Safari.

A panel at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain last week praised the iPhone for its ease of use and interface.

Metro-area tournaments soon could be feeling the squeeze

This week marks the beginning of an annual Minnesota ritual: high school state tournaments. From now until late March, athletes and teams will see their dreams come true, as they compete on the big stage.

But that stage could become smaller in a few years, for reasons that have nothing to do with sports and everything to do with business. Because of increasing fees for using Xcel Energy Center, Target Center and facilities at the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota State High School League will have to make some hard decisions about the future of the winter state tournaments.

Imagine if the state wrestling tournament were moved to Rochester or Mankato. Or if the state basketball tournaments were divided by classes and held at four sites, some in the Twin Cities, some outstate -- and none of them were televised.

Four SOPU leaders booked

Gulati Travel Services were fined Rs 5, 000 in the same case.

The forum said: Spicejet and all other airlines are directed through this general order to refund the ticket amount to passengers to allow them to travel by another airlines if they choose to do so.

Further, Spicejet and Gulati Travel Services were directed to pay Rs 51,000 as litigation cost to Dr Bhagat Singh Sherawat, a resident of Sector 19 here.

Sherawat had got four tickets of Spicejet booked on Septamber 28, 2006 for a nine-day family tour. The flight was to leave on December 23, 2006 to Banglore from Delhi. He purchased the return tickets of Indian Airlines, which were non-refundable.

On reaching Delhi, Sherawat was told the flight had been cancelled as the previous flights were running late due to fog.

LAST night after her uncontested "victory" in Florida, Hillary Clinton was introduced by... Alcee Hastings, removed from by the Senate in 1998 after impeachment from* in the House, under a heavy cloud of suspicion of bribery when he was a federal judge. (A bit of the colourful background here.) Bill Clinton pardoned Mr Hastings' alleged co-conspirator on his last day in office.

Doesn't Ms Clinton have any slightly less dodgy-looking Floridian backers? Or if slightly suspect they must be, ones whose former associates had not been pardoned from federal prison by her husband?

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- A 32-year-old violin teacher accused of serving as a lookout while her friends planted a devastating fire bomb at the University of Washington in 2001 took the stand in her own defense Wednesday, telling jurors she had no part in the crime and never believed in setting fires to make political statements."It's very dangerous to human lives," Briana Waters, of Oakland, Calif., testified in U.S. District Court.
