Man found shot in pickup

Shattered glass was all that remained at the scene yesterday morning, after an apparent gangland hit in North Vancouver.

A man in his 20s was found slumped over in the front seat of a pickup truck on Saturday night after police were called to the 600-block Queens Road West around 11:15.

The fatal shooting, which happened in the parking lot of the Delbrook Recreation Centre, had all the indicators of being a targeted hit, police said yesterday.

Small towns disappearing across North Texas prairie

His dream machine is still churning.

"I'd like to see the whole area developed into a classy community and high-density housing," Draper says. "I could see office space for sure, restaurants, hotels …"

Aubrey

Over the past decade, furious development in Denton County has radically altered the landscape, the culture and the ethos of virtually every small town in North Texas.

Take Aubrey, the self-proclaimed "horse capital" of Texas. For decades Aubrey, 12 miles northeast of Denton, was mostly known for the peanut farms that spread in every direction from the tiny town.

But today, Aubrey is surrounded by horse ranches. Horse breeders, racers and trainers were attracted to Aubrey's sandy soils and moderate climate.

Meanwhile, Obama's 'I'm not an operating officer' admission seems near-disastrous. a) Obama makes the presidency sound like a grand, slo-mo transformation of vision into legislation. But there are crisis requiring quick, coordinated action, and the type of leader who can act effectively in a crisis is likely to be a good "operating officer" rather than a visionary; b). Once you pass a law you have to implement it, which requires getting results out of the civil service departments. This would seem to be especially true of national health care. The president who ignores the bureaucracy and focuses on 'vision' is apt to be defeated by that bureaucracy. c) Immersing yourself up to the elbows in the various departments is one way to find out the information that bureaucrats are unlikely to pass up the chain of command.

250 watch Healy, Creighton trade jabs in fourth mayoral debate

CANTON Janet Weir Creighton and William J. Healy II might have been friends four years ago, but they certainly don't seem to be friends now. The two mayoral candidates took jabs at each other Sunday night during a debate sponsored by the Temple Israel Brotherhood and News-Talk 1480 WHBC radio. About 250 people attended the program, which was carried live on WHBC. It was the fourth debate between Creighton, a Republican seeking her second term as mayor, and Healy, a Democrat serving his second term in the Ohio House. Sunday's debate came on the heels of reports that Healy offered to help Creighton in her 2003 campaign when she beat Canton City Councilman Bill Smuckler by 371 votes to become mayor. Copies of e-mails from Healy show he offered to record phone messages urging people to vote for Creighton.

This university gets no government grant

He said it had happened so suddenly that the state government had not been able to make alternative arrangements Every year, NABARD provides about Rs 400 crore to Rs 600 crore to Punjab for agricultural loan purposes.

Earlier, NABARD had never denied funds to Punjab. In fact, it used to give preference to the state because the recovery of loans advanced in the cooperative sector has been far better as compared to that in many other states.

ROVERS HOLD VILLA

Fabio Capello saw England candidates Scott Carson and Ashley Young make significant contributions but Aston Villa missed out on the chance to climb into a Champions League spot against Mark Hughes's side.

Carson saved a first-half penalty from Matt Derbyshire before Roque Santa Cruz put the visitors ahead after 67 minutes with his 11th league goal of the campaign.

But Young, Villa's most dangerous player, levelled six minutes later with a stunning 20 yard free-kick to boost his chances of being included in the squad to face Switzerland at Wembley in 11 days.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill believes Capello would have been impressed by the performance of Young.

He said: "When we got the ball to Ashley, he (Capello) would have been impressed with his skills.

Before you take out a second mortgage or otherwise deplete your savings in order to pay for your child's college education, you might want to ask the colleges to which your child is applying some questions.

1. Can one obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree at your college without having read a single Shakespeare play, one Federalist Paper or one book of the Bible?

If so, why attend such a college?

2. Does the college allow military recruiters on its campus?

Before being threatened by Congress with a cutoff of federal funds, many colleges denied military recruiters access to their campus. They did so either because of their hostility to military in general or specific hostility to the war in Iraq, or because of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding gays.
