Missing canoeist arrested in UK

Police, who are trying to piece together the movements of John Darwin over the last five years, have made a public appeal for information over his whereabouts.

They are also investigating the authenticity of a photo published in British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mirror, which claims to show Darwin alongside his wife in an apartment in Panama City, Panama in July 2006.

The 57-year-old was presumed dead in 2002 after he went missing after going canoeing in the North Sea off the coastal town of Seaton Carew, in northeast England.

In an appeal for public help, Detective Superintendent of the Cleveland Police, Tony Hutchinson, said: "There will be people out there who know exactly where he has been, what he has been doing and where he has been living." Watch the police request for information on Darwin.

US Airways puts $25 fee on 2nd bag

That extra piece of luggage is going to cost you.

Starting May 5, US Airways will begin charging passengers $25 for a second checked bag, matching a recent policy change by rival United Airlines. The move illustrates the shift in many industries to an a la carte model in which customers pay only for the services they want -- or can't avoid.

"It's a sign of the times," said David Stempler, president of the Air Travelers Association, a trade group representing U.S. passengers. The big air carriers "are unbundling their services and may start charging for each of them -- extra bags, priority seats, food, maybe drinks, pillows and blankets."

US Airways -- which already charges $7 for meals in coach, $15 to book a reservation over the phone, $20 to buy a ticket at the airport and $2 for curbside check-in -- will assess the new checked-baggage fee on each leg of a round-trip flight, totaling $50 for both ways.

PQ prefers 'conversation' to referendum

Imagine, no Buzz yelping about Cry-sler, no more Centre of the Universe self-righteous-ness, no more Make-me-Laughs, no more Tie Domi. Oh-boy, the BO smells good. SK, BC, and AB could keep their surpluses, and would not have give welfare (transfer payments) to Ontario and the CBC. Posted 05/03/08 at 11:34 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Tamarack uber resort commands vistas at premium prices

Fairmont Tamarack, a luxury resort and vacation-home development at Tamarack Resort in Valley County, plans to break ground later this year. If you want a home there, you'll need a big bank account. The project produced $140 million in sales from 125 full memberships sold during a seven-hour period last year, Tamarack says. Among people who have bought homes are TV stars Eric Dane of Grey's Anatomy and Jason Lewis of Sex in the City and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart.Properties start in the $700,000s. Spokesman Chris Lyman declined to say how much the development would cost to build. The project will consist of 305 hotel-condominium units and other residences. Residents will have views of the Payette River Mountains, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course and Lake Cascade. They also will have a ski concierge, a children's entertainment center, salon services, free shoeshines, onsite car rental and other services.

A Miami actor's great performance captured for posterity

When you see a [recorded] show in the archives or on TV, it doesn't begin to approach what happened in the theater. But it has power and meaning,'' Esparza says. ``It's Steve's work, our version of an important and really significant work.''

Certainly the Tony voters agreed when they named Company last season's best revival of a musical. Esparza lost the best-actor Tony to Curtains star David Hyde-Pierce but won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for his electrifying performance as a cool, disengaged charmer who finally embraces the exhilarating emotions of his climactic song, Being Alive.

Part of what made Company on Broadway so memorable was director Doyle's approach to the show, one he also used in staging an earlier Broadway revival of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and in a number of productions at his home theater in England.

Carmona eager to prove winning 19 games was no fluke

In baseball, it's always about winning, but I recognized there's a lot more pressure in the playoffs. "This year, everything is new. All the good things of last year, that's over. All the bad things, too." His first outing this spring replicated his past postseason. Monday against Toronto, he gave up two runs and five hits with a walk, a hit batter and a strikeout in only 1 2-3 innings. "I was overthrowing, but I felt fine, no problem," Carmona said. His teammates believe Carmona has what it takes to not only survive but thrive this year, however. "He's got such a good feel for pitching and works so darn hard that I don't see how he can't succeed," said first baseman Ryan Garko, who caught Carmona in the minors. "Who knows if he'll win 19 again because there's so many things he can't control like how many runs we score, things like that," Garko continued.

McCain: Garden variety politician

Indeed, he has teamed up with the most liberal Democrats in the Senate on several occasions to promote dangerous ideas which no true conservative could tolerate. Let's run through a few of them:McCain-Feingold — This bill was the dangerous "campaign finance reform" law which essentially took away many group's right to support a candidate of their choice with their own money. It has also empowered such moneyed interests as George Soros, who is reputed to be the liberal patron saint of campaign finance reform.McCain-Kennedy — This early version of "comprehensive immigration reform" was an outright odious surrender to Mexico and would have resulted in legalizing millions of illegal immigrants. Just as President Bush felt the wrath of conservatives for his reform plan, so too McCain has violated what many consider a core principle of sovereignty.
