New 2008 Vehicles Named Best Resale Value Award Winners by Kelley Blue ...
IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelley Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com), the leading provider of new and used vehicle information, announces the all-new 2008 model-year vehicle winners of its annual Best Resale Value Awards, which recognizes current and upcoming vehicles for their projected retained value five years from now (the average ownership period). Since depreciation (or loss of value) is typically a car-buyer's primary expense during ownership, these awards, like all of kbb.com's new and used vehicle information, are designed to help consumers make more informed car-buying decisions. Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value Awards are based on projections from the Kelley Blue Book Residual Value Guide researched by an expert staff of automotive market analysts. These prestigious awards honor vehicles expected to maintain the greatest proportion of their original retail price after five years of ownership.
Travel junk fees are out of control
There's a lawsuit in California right now that's concerned with junk fees not being revealed until after you get to the car rental counter. This makes Internet comparison shopping very difficult. The lowest price you see online may be fake because it doesn't reflect junk fees. With airfare, the actual price is usually about 20 percent higher than the advertised price. What kind of junk fees are most common? For air travel, the passenger facility charge (PFC) is a biggie. This is where the terminal charges you for walking their halls -- a completely bogus charge that they convinced Congress to approve. Then you have a charge per flight segment, a federal security service charge and others. .
Buyout Shops Show Timing Is Everything In Deal-Making Arena
Dex Media Inc. was one of the greatest private-equity trades of the decade. And that is precisely why it is important to take note of its deep failings in public-company life. For four years, buyout shops Carlyle Group LLC and Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe played the yellow-pages firm with a maestro's aplomb. They paid themselves special dividends. They took the company public in 2004, cashing in part of their stake. The capper came in the 2006 merger with fellow publisher R.H. Donnelley Corp., creating the nation's third-largest phone-book outfit by total volumes published. By the time it was all over, the $1.6 billion Dex investment had yielded a $2.6 billion profit. As sold to the public, the yellow-pages story was always about faith. Faith that the pen-and-ink business would hold up despite lower margins from Internet offerings.
I Drove The Indy 500
The Miller 91 looked to other cars of the period like Jim Clark's rear-engined Lotus-Ford in 1965. It was so different, so unusual, so perfectly engineered. You'd look at it and your eye would just fall on all the different interesting places and you'd go, "Look at thaaat!" Other racers saw it and probably said, "Well, let's just go home." Harry Miller was one of the most unknown guys. The average person might know Duesenberg or Bugatti, but he probably doesn't know about Miller. He was an intuitive engineer with no formal training, but he was an artist who knew, he just knew, how a part should look or feel, right down to the tiniest millimeter. I have a Bugatti that was one of three cars that American race driver Leon Duray traded for two Miller 91s that he originally brought over to France to race.
Fla. Tourism Hit By National Economic Skid
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's economy, already staggered by a stagnant real estate market and tight credit conditions, suffered another blow Friday when officials said tourism fell by 1.5 million visitors in 2007. Preliminary estimates showed 82.4 million people visited Florida in 2007, compared to 83.9 who came in 2006. It was the first drop-off in visitors to Florida since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the northeast. "Trends suggest that some vacationers traveling by auto may be staying closer to home," said Bud Nocera, president and CEO of Visit Florida, the state's private-public tourism agency. Folks in other states apparently were staying closer to home too. Tourism was flat a year ago as well, increasing by 1 percent, and Visit Florida has renewed its call on the Legislature for money to help lure more visitors with advertising blitzes.
Obama and Progressive Change
Barack Obama's Plan: As a candidate for the United States Senate in 2002, Obama put his political career on the line to oppose going to war in Iraq, and warned of “an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences." Obama has been a consistent, principled and vocal opponent of the war in Iraq. In 2003 and 2004, he spoke out against the war on the campaign trail; In 2005, he called for a phased withdrawal of our troops; In 2006, he called for a timetable to remove our troops, a political solution within Iraq, and aggressive diplomacy with all of Iraq's neighbors; In January 2007, he introduced legislation in the Senate to remove all of our combat troops from Iraq by March 2008. In September 2007, he laid out a detailed plan for how he will end the war as president.

BRITISH BRAIN DRAIN
Well, Great Britain is one of the most expensive places in the world to live or to visit. THE PROS and cons on Lindsay Lohan appearing as Marilyn Monroe for New York mag continue apace. The publication has all but imploded. Their Web site collapsed under constant hits! Now we hear Lindsay is tempted to continue her nude homage to MM. Playboy's Hugh Hefner has offered the young star the chance to re-create Marilyn's famed nude swim from the unfinished film "Something's Got To Give." But surely the talented Lohan said too much of a good thing is too much. Less nostalgically, she was spotted shopping at Neiman Marcus "after hours," so as not to be annoyed by gawkers. She bought Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana shoes, some cool Tom Ford shades and several clingy dresses in shades of lemon and tangerine.
Every School Every Thursday -- Ankeny
They had a great time celebrating the 100th day. In math, the students worked on dividing 100 items into piles of 10, 5, and 2, counting to 100 by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and they compared 100 pieces of rice and 100 pennies. In reading, the students wrote 100 words, read for 100 seconds, and made words with the letters, "one hundred days." The students also finished the sentences, "If I had 100 mosquito bites, I would ..." and "If I had 100 legs, I would ..." Northwest Spencer Smith, Josephine Lewis, and Jennifer Rich's class buddied up with fourth and fifth grade students to make paper mache planets for our upcoming fun night. We also read books about the planets and sang songs. We had a great messy time. Southeast Four lucky students at Southeast got a chance to go out to lunch with the principal.
